Funding boost for alcohol support charity
A charity that supports people in need of drug and alcohol treatment has received a large financial boost.
Alcohol and Drug Support (ADS) South-West Scotland has been awarded £665,000 from the Big Lottery Fund and the Robertson Trust in order to improve its 'befriending and peer support project' which helps abusers of alcohol and drugs.
Mike McLurg, chairman of the ADS, told the BBC that the local area has "more than its fair share" of alcohol and drug misuse problems, which adversely affect families.
"Only recently, official figures published by the Scottish Executive highlighted that the number of deaths through liver problems related to alcohol had trebled and most of us across this region are well aware of the negative community issues around drug misuse," he said.
"This award will be a very positive step in supporting individuals and families affected through substance misuse."
The Scottish Executive recently published a new action plan on alcohol problems, with figures suggesting a 54 per cent increase in reported drinking by 15-year-olds and a 100 per cent rise in drinking by 13-year-olds since 1990.
