Alcohol addicts overcome problems to take part in marathon

A group of six recovering addicts who successfully completed a marathon in May are to take part in another lengthy run.

The men were all members of the Denver Rescue Mission Marathon Team, a programme which helps recovering drink and drug addicts with their rehabilitation through running.

However, the programme only gets them to run one race but former member Nick Sterner senior didn't want it to end there so he set up the AIR (Activity Inspired Rehabilitation) Foundation so that the men could continue their training and use it as a rehab tool.

Now, six of the Rescue Mission 'alumni' who have joined up to the foundation will be taking part in the Denver Marathon or half-marathon on Sunday, October 14th.

Nick Sterner senior, who was an enthusiastic runner before he became addicted to meth, told the Denver Post: "When they get out there and they start crossing finish lines, they go to the expo of a marathon or post-race events, they are connecting with the community in a positive way. They start to hunger for that. It becomes an intrinsic thing."
