Drink puts a child a week in hospital
It has been revealed that at least one Lothian school pupil is admitted to hospital every week for
alcohol treatment.
Last year, 56 children aged under 15 were treated and almost two-thirds of the admissions were attributed to "acute intoxication", according to data released to the Evening News by ISD Scotland.
Tom Wood, chairman of the Edinburgh Action on Alcohol and Drugs team, told the newspaper that the figures could be a small representation of a much bigger problem.
"I'm surprised it's not higher because we know young people have been drinking more. Some of these statistics worry me a little because some people record them, some people don't," he stated.
"Saying that, we have to take them on face value and what it shows over the last ten years is that it's not going away, despite all our efforts."
He said that the government and the NHS need to challenge young people's behaviour before they become addicted to drink.
Last Christmas, the Salford Drug and Alcohol Action Team sent Christmas cards to 90,000 households in west Manchester.
The cards included tips on how to tackle
binge drinking and drug use in families.
