Government of Canada Delivering Critical Treatment Initiatives
The Canadian Government recently announced critical drug treatment initiatives for Canadian provinces and territories under the National Anti-Drug Strategy.
"This investment will provide an important boost to the drug treatment options that are available to young people who are at-risk," said Tony Clement, Minister of Health. "It represents the Government's commitment under the National Anti-Drug Strategy to work with our provincial and territorial counterparts and partners, such as the Canadian Centre on Substance Abuse. Our objective is to improve access to quality services and effective approaches to treating individuals who pose a risk to themselves, their families and their communities."
The Drug Treatment Funding Program (DTFP) is a new federal contributions program under the Treatment Action Plan of the National Anti-Drug Strategy. The DTFP will provide $111 million over five years to provincial and territorial governments to assist in strengthening treatment systems and in filling critical gaps in treatment through investments in early intervention treatment initiatives designed to reduce and eliminate the progression and severity of illicit drug use behaviour among youth.
"We know that drugs are dangerous and destructive. This is why this Government is committed to ensuring that those people who are addicted to illicit drugs get the help they need," said Minister Nicholson. "At the same time, however, we are also being very clear: we will not tolerate those who prey on our youth or profit off of the vulnerability of addicts."
