Government praises alcohol initiatives
A Home Office document has praised an initiative in north Somerset which is aimed at easing the public's concerns about
alcoholics and ensuring that those in need of
alcohol treatment have access to services.
The 'Safe. Sensible. Social' document summarises the next stages in the government's National Alcohol Strategy.
In it, the success of Weston-super-Mare's Streetsafe Bus - a service that provides an emergency and recovery room for drinkers - is highlighted.
Councillor Ian Peddlesden, executive member for community services, commented: "The Streetsafe Bus continues to have a presence in Weston and work with partners continues in the area of setting up an accreditation scheme for those organisations offering alcohol and drug rehabilitation services."
A separate government document has also highlighted the good work being done through Operation Jupiter, an initiative that was set up in response to a report in 2004 on the nature, quality and provision of drug and
alcohol treatment in central Weston-super-Mare.
Councillor Peddlesden added: "These reports acknowledge that we are coming up with innovative schemes and successfully putting them in to operation."
