Drug addiction starting younger

It appears that drug abuse is beginning younger and younger these days.  In some cases the influences of parents who abuse drugs or mothers who abused drugs during pregnancy can have a huge impact on the likelihood of adolescents also misusing drugs relatively early on.  However there are still huge numbers of adolescents taking drugs who have no genetic predisposition, or familial history of drug taking, and still become entangled in the ugly world of drug abuse.  For some it is the influences of peers, and the desire to fit in that lead to drug use.  But for others they may use drugs in order to escape the negative events in their life, and reports have suggested that young people who suffer from depression may be at increased risk of drug use (Medical News Today, 2012).

However for those who turn to drugs due to depression researchers suggest there may be some good news on the horizon.  A recent study has investigated the use of anti-depressants and other techniques to treat depression, and have found that if people respond well to treatment, they are significantly less likely to develop drug abuse in the future (Medical News Today, 2012).

These findings show promise for the prevention of drug abuse for a particularly vulnerable group of young people, and it could also show benefits for those who are already suffering from addiction as a result of depression, however further investigations would need o be made into this.  It may help reduce the numbers of young people who are in need to addiction rehab in the future, and receiving and responding to treatment for depression will most likely improve their live in numerous other ways as well.

As with most illnesses, the gold standard for drug addiction in prevention rather than cure, and these results show that in some cases, if the circumstances are right, it is possible to help prevent addiction rather than have to treat it at a later date.
