Removing criminals from drug addiction

The dangers that are associated with drug use are wide and varied.  It does not end with the physical dangers to health, there are also risks that come as a result of trying to get hold of the drugs or trying to pay for them.

The government has put strict laws in place to try and prevent individuals going down a bad road, but unfortunately the process still goes on, even with all of the sanctions in place to try and stop it.  Efforts have been made to try and make it more difficult to sell and buy drugs, but often this just means that those who are determined to do so will just place themselves at even greater risk than before.

The questions surrounding drug use, crime and what is to do be done about these issues is a difficult one to answer, and everyone will have their different viewpoints.  Some people support more extreme methods, such as the legalisation of certain drugs in order to reduce the numbers of people who have criminal records for drug offenses.

But the government in Uruguay have taken a step further, and are considering plans to have the government themselves sell cannabis to their citizens (The Fix, 2012).  If the plans were to come into place it would mean that the government would be permitted to sell cannabis to registered adults who are on a government database, in an attempt to take the dealing of drugs out of the hands of organised crime.  The plans may seem extreme to some, but the Uruguay government feel it will actually improve the overall levels of drug use in the country, and will also cut the high levels of organised crime, which are largely funded by drug money.  The plains aim to only sell to adults who are registered on a database, and in doing so it would allow the government to monitor individual's use, and hopefully help identify people who may be at risk from severe addiction, or may be likely to progress onto more intense forms of drugs, such as heroin.  This could potentially have a positive impact on the numbers of people needing rehab, drug sales from criminals would hopefully be reduced, and it would also be financially beneficial to the government at the same time.

It may work in theory, but in practice it could be entirely different and until it is implemented, the full fallout cannot be assessed.  However, what the plans show is that it may be necessary in some cases to think outside the box in order to tackle a big issue like drugs and crime, and sometimes if all other avenues have been exhausted, sometimes the more outrageous ideas need to be considered.
