One of the most common worried that people have when they enter into rehab is what will happen when they leave. When you enter into a rehab program there are many safeguards in order to protect their residents living there, and due to the nature of the environment there is generally few tempting situations that may cause stress to individuals, but this is not the case outside of rehab.
The treatment setting is very controlled, and offers people the perfect opportunity to learn and hone the skills that they will need when they eventually leave, however, no matter how much theoretical preparations are done while staying at a centre, it cannot really prepare an individual for the stress of living independently in situations that may cause high levels of stress and temptation.
Due to this concern and the high rates of relapse post treatment, US researchers have been working on a device which is aimed at helping people become aware of when they are in high stress situations, and will offer intervention techniques to help people resist temptation or deal with the stress in another way (Medical News Today, 2012).
The device called Iheal is intended to be worn discretely and will measure physiological signs of stress, such as sweating and increased heart rate. Users will then be alerted that they are exhibiting signs of stress and will be prompted to input information about the situation and their emotional state, and based on this input will be issued with coping strategies and advice.
The device is a fantastic use of our modern technologies, and could offer potentially lifesaving interventions when people need them most. It is of course not anticipated to be a replacement for support from a social group, but for the situations where an individual is not able to access support and advice from others, it could be a fantastic resource.
It is still undergoing modifications and testing to ensure the ultimate project is as complete as it can be, and it could still be a long way off before such a device is available. However, it could have a very positive impact on addiction sufferers and help keep them free from drugs, so lets hope that in the near future after rehab UK, US and all other addiction sufferers will have access to such a device.
