Trying to educate young people about the dangers of drug use is essential to help prevent them making poor decisions. Often these education programs are part of regular schooling and are sessions that focus on how drug use can impact an individuals life, including the impact it may have on their health and social life.
However some reports have shown that in other areas of the world, the attempt to combat potential drug use has been taken a step too far. A recent report has suggested that in Thailand, school children were enrolled into drug rehab centers despite having no record of drug use (Bangkok Post, 2012). It appears that the the enrollment of these children was made in error, but the incident helps demonstrate how the attempts to help young people can be misguided in some instances, and it highlights how vital it is for agencies to design programs that are suitable and appropriate for the individuals in question.
Developing appropriate interventions is certainly not an easy task, as although young people may be viewed as one group to be targeted, the truth is that all the people within that group are individuals and will each need a slightly different approach to truly get the message across. This is why it is so important for educational and treatment programs to be varied and encourage individuals to consider for themselves what it is that will make a difference to their own actions. No matter how much you try to tell an individual what to do, often it is only when they chose to do it themselves that it will become a long standing decision, and while experts can work to foster this intrinsic motivation, it is important to allow individuals the space to make these decisions for themselves.
