There are many services available to help people with a drug addiction overcome their disease, and one of the thing about having so many is that they can differ quite widely from one another. In many ways these differences can offer distinct benefits such as more choice choice for people using services and also a sharing of ideas and methods for those providing the services. Essentially the differences offer a greater degree of choice to people who use these services and while this can be very positive, for some it can lead to confusion and reluctance to engage in treatment.
But another problem with such diversity in treatments on offer can mean that people who are limited in choice, either by finances or ability to travel for example, may not be able to access a certain service. In many cases this does not present a huge problem, as it must be said that generally most treatment centres offer high quality care that if applied effectively can have a huge positive impact on people's lives.
But in the case of detox, for example, certain centres are not equipped to offer this service, and this can break the continuity of care, as people may not wish to attend more than one facility to receive their treatment. This could mean that some individuals may only choose to access detox and no further treatment, or worse, they may choose not to access treatment at all.
These factors are important to assess before individuals access treatment, and such factors need to be addressed and dealt with to maximise individuals chances of success. Much research has been conducted into the importance of continuity of care, and many researchers have advocated that care should be as controlled and continuous as possible (McLellan, et al., 2005). Continuous care is important as it helps people to develop routines and reduces anxieties and confusion, and all of these factors help people maintain their recovery in the long run.
